William Boatman

17 Oct. 1834. Highland Co., Ohio. William (X) Boatman of said county, aged 77, declares he served first in the company of Capt. Sweringen in Col. Hyett's regiment under Gen. McIntosh in Sept. 1777 or 1778 as a substitute for a man living in Shepherdstown, Va. He marched to Martinsburg, then to the mouth of Big Beaver on Ohio River and there built Fort McIntosh, and then to Tuscarawas, a fork of the Muskingum River, and there built Fort Lawrence. They marched back to Fort McIntosh and at the expiration of four months he was discharged and returned to his residence near Redstone fort,Pa.

William Boatman was born in Fauquier Co., Virginia in December 1757. He lived near Redstone fort when called into service and from there moved to Shirtee near Catfish camp, now Washington, PA. He moved to Kentucky and resided in Fayette and Bourbon counties for several years. About 1800 he moved to Highland County, Ohio. Boatman was placed on the Ohio pension roll at $20 per annum. Certificate 29742 was issued 13 Feb. 1835.
