Elija Runion
Jackson Co., Va. On this 22nd day of June, 1833, personally appeared before me the subscriber and Justice of the Peace in and for the said county of Jackson, ELIJAH RUNION. A resident of Spring Creek in the county of Jackson, aged 76 years, and made oath to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832—That he entered the service of the U.S. in Shenandoah Co., Va., May, 1778, drafted as a private militiaman and placed under command of Capt. John Rader and marched in a company of militia commanded by the said Capt. Rader in company with Capt. Bucks company of militia from the said county of Shenandoah—marched up the North Branch of Potomac River, crossed the Allegany mountain at Yah Glades, thence to the Monongahelia River, crossing the same near the mouth of Cheat River, thence to Wheeling Fort where they arrived in July, found the fort garrisoned by a few militia under command of Col. Zane. Halted at Wheeling until some time in the month of Sept., then marched through the wilderness with a regiment commanded by Col. John Gibson in the army of Genl. McIntosh toward the Indian towns on the Sandusky, proceeded as far as Tuscarawa, halted here and built a fort which was call Fort Laurens, winter setting in the fort garrisoned with one or two hundred men under command of Col Gibson and the balance of the army returned to the settlements. Declarant was discharged at Wheeling in Dec. by his Capt. Rader, having served 7 months as a private. In June, 1780 in the county of Ohio, Va., he volunteered as a private under command of Capt. Elijah Runion was born in Shenandoah Co., Va. on the 11th of July, 1757. He was living in said county when first called into service. From 1780-1781 he lived in Ohio County, Va [now West Virginia], in 1783-1785 in Harrison Co., Va., and resided in Jackson County at the time of making his pension application.
