Pvt. Garrett (Garret) Applegate

He immediately afterward [1778] volunteered for six months in Gen. McIntosh's campaign, beginning about 1 Sept. 1778. They rendezvoused at Fort McIntosh on the Ohio River a short distance below the mouth of Big Beaver and were engaged in building a fort. The troops then started in pursuit of the Indians and on the Muskingum they built Fort Lawrence [sic] in the month of November. They then resumed their march back, suffering severely from cold, hunger and fatigue, and arrived at Fort McIntosh in the latter part of December. He served in the company of Capt. Isaac Pearce and regiment of Col. Joseph Beler. Maj. Valentine and Colonels Crawford, Brodhead and Gibson were with the troops at Fort McIntosh.

Soliders who are now dead who served with him are Minor Sturgis, Peter Sturgis, Obediah Robins, John Evibly [?], who were in McIntosh's campaign.

Garret Applegate of Harrison Co., Ind., private in company of Capt. Wall in regiment of Col. Beler in Virginia and Pennsylvania line for one year, was placed on the Indiana pension roll at $40 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 26747 was issued 22 April 1834.

Applegate applied for his pension on 9 April 1833 in Harrison County, IN. He claimed he was 74 years of age.
