Stephen McBride
State of Indiana; County of Martin; On this the 9th day of November in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before---Alexander Shircliff, a justice of the Peace of said County, Jeremiah McBride who being by me did swear according to law, declares and says that he is one of the heirs of Stephen McBride who was a Soldier in the Revolutionary War. Said Stephen McBride was drafted at Hampshire County in the state of Virginia some time in the Autumn of seventeen hundred and seventy eight and continued in service said war at that time about six months, that he served his said term of six months at Fort Laurens with General McIntosh for the purpose of destroying the Indian towns and intimidating and chastising the Indians. And that afterwards he was drafted by Captain Foreman and marched from said County of Hampshire to the Fort at Wheeling on the Ohio River at this time that said fort was abandoned on account of the many depredations of the Indians, having served altogether the term of nine months. That he was at the time he performed said services about twenty years of age, and that he the affidant is now, sixty seven years of age and that there are other heirs of said Stephen McBride still living. He further states that he makes this affidavit and application for the purpose of obtaining any and all pension money which may be due to said heirs of said Stephen McBride up to the time of his death which took place in March 1837 at Columbiana County, Ohio and that he never received any Pension in his life time. /s/ Jeremiah McBride

The above pension application dated 9 November 1855 by Jermiah McBride, son of Stephen McBride, was obtained from the National Archives of the United States in Washington, D.C., and transcribed by Ron Dellbringge of Kirkwood, MO. His wife, Sue Ellen McBride, is the gggg-graddaughter of Stephen McBride.

According to Mr. Dellbringgee, Stephen McBride was a Quaker and took measurers while he was alive to deny a pension due him as not being compatible with his religious beliefs. The U.S. government denied Jeremiah McBride eligibility for a pension. However, family descendants of Stephen McBride were successful in obtaining DAR membership and acceptance in February, 1912; DAR Linage Book Vol. XCII, 1912. Stephen McBride is buried at the Sandy Springs Quaker Cemetery in Hanoverton, Columbiana County, Ohio.
