Pvt. William Alexander

In March 1779 he and many others volunteered and chose David Williamson as captain at Fort McIntosh at the mouth of Beaver. They marched with Gen. McIntosh to the Tuskarawis [sic] where he had built Fort Lawrence [sic] the year before. He served 25 days. Fort Lawrence was besieged and they went to relieve it and supply provisions, but the Indians were dispersed when they arrived. Col. Gibson commanded at Fort Lawrence and the garrison remained there some few months and then vacated the fort.

He was born in Chester Co., Penn., in Feb. 1757. He lived in Ohio Co., Va., (now Washington Co., Penn.) when he served and until about 12 years after the war when he moved to Mercer County.

25 Dec. 1832. Mercer Co., Penn. James Huston of Mahoning Township, aged 69, declares he was in the same company with William Alexander on Gen. McIntosh's campaign to Fort Lawrence [sic] and also in May 1782 served with him in Capt. Leet's company when they went to Sandusky with Col. Crawford.

William Alexander of Mercer Co., Penn., private and sergeant in company of Capt. Virgin in regt. of Col. Shepherd in Virginia troops for 7 months and 25 days as private and one month sergeant, was placed on the Pennsylvania pension roll at $31.08 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 18513 was issued 9 Sept. 1832.

William Alexander was born February 17, 1757. He died September 4, 1834. His wife, Elizabeth, was born November 5, 1765. They were married April 24, 1787.
