John Fox
Washington Co., Pa., 25 day of Sept. 1821 personally appeared John Fox aged sixty years, resident in Followfield Township in said county, who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the Rev. War as follows, he enlisted in the year 1777 on Muddy Creek, Pa., in the company commanded by Capt. Benjamin Biggs of the 13 Va. Regiment in the service of the United States, that being enlisted for three years or during the war, he served under Capt. Biggs about two years when he was taken prisoner by the Shawnee Indians at Fort Laurens on the Tuscarawas River, then commanded by Genl. Broadhead and that he remained a prisoner with the Indians about seven years and was liberated at the treaty held by Genl. Butler and Clarke at the mouth of the Miami River. That at the time he was taken by the Indians he was wounded in the left hand and on his arrival at the Indian Towns was made to run the gauntlet and so beaten over the head that he has ever since been unable to do any hard work. That he has a wife and five children, two of whom are married and the other two quite young, the eldest about 13 years of age, personal property listed which is valued at fourteen dollars. /s/ John Fox-(X) his mark before Thomas Morgan, Prothonotary.
Inscribed on the roll of Pa. at the rate of 8 dollars per month to commence the 25 of Sept. 1821.
Ohio Co. Va. Personally appeared before me the subscriber, A Justice of the Peace in and for said county, Benjamin Biggs, late captain in the 13th Virginia Regiment, who being first sworn deposeth and saith that John Fox, in the spring of 1777 enlisted in his company to serve as a regular soldier for three years or during the war, that he served as such about two years during which time he was attached to the 13th Va. Regiment then in the Continental service commanded by Col. John Gibson that in February 1779 he was taken prisoner at Fort Laurens by the Indians and was held by them until the war was over, that he has frequently heard the said John say that the beating the Indians gave the said John on his head always injured him. /s/ Benjamin Biggs late Capt. 13th Va. Biggs, then attached to the 13th Virginia Regiment in the continental service commanded by Col. John Gibson, who said that John Fox did serve with him in the said company commanded by Capt. Biggs, for about two years when he was taken prisoner by the Indians at Fort Lawrence in Feb. 1779 and was held by them until the close of the war, that he is fully of the opinion that he is unable to support himself and is much afflicted with a pain in his head. /s/ John Mills, late an ensign in said regiment 6 day of July 1821—Before Richard Simms.
