Pvt. Daniel Davis

23 Sept. 1833. Cabell Co., Va. Daniel Davis of said county, aged 74 on 11 February last, declares in 1777 he entered the army as a militia man under Capt. John Henderson and on 1 April they marchedÖ. to the fort [Point Pleasant] where they remained until 20 December when he was discharged by Capt. Henderson, having served seven months and twenty days.

"...on 4 June 1778 he returned into service as a substitute for William Davis as a private and marched from Bedford Co., Va., under Capt. William Rentfrow up the Roanoke to King’s Fort and then to Potts’ Fort on Sinking Creek and on 4 September was discharged by Capt. Rentfrow. Immediately after he was discharged by Capt. Rentfrow he volunteered as a private under Capt. William Thompson to guard the frontiers and the next day marched from Fincastle through Stanton to Romney by Lonill [Louill?] Hill and crossed the Monongahela River and then to the mouth of the Big Beaver. There he entered into McIntosh’s Fort and joined McIntosh’s army and from there they marched to Tuscarawas River and built a fort. Capt. Thompson received orders from Gen. McIntosh to march back to McIntosh’s Fort where he received a discharge from Capt. Thompson on 20 December.

He was born in Chester Co., Pa., 11 Feb. 1759. He has a record taken from his father’s bible. He lived in Greenbrier, then Augusta County when called into service and since the war has lived in Kanawha, Greenbrier and Cabell counties.
